Black Friday for Memberships: What to Offer Instead

Every year around this time, my inbox turns into a countdown clock. Fifty percent off. Lifetime access. Doors close at midnight. You know the emails. You’ve probably written a few of them.

And if you run a membership, there’s a specific kind of pressure that shows up in November. Everyone else is running a sale, so the obvious move is to put a big number on the thing you’re proudest of.

That’s the mistake I see most often when it comes to Black Friday for memberships.

For years I just sat Black Friday out. This year I’m running a sale, five days of it, and my membership still isn’t part of it. Here’s why, what I’m offering instead, and how to plan a Black Friday that brings the right people closer without watering down the thing that pays your bills.

What’s the Biggest Mistake With Black Friday for Memberships?

Discounting the membership itself. It brings in price-driven members, teaches your audience to wait, and tells your current members they overpaid.

The sign-ups do roll in. That part works. It’s what happens after that matters.

When someone joins at half off, ask what they actually said yes to. Maybe it was the people and the support and the room you’ve built. Or maybe it was the price. If it was the price, that member has one foot out the door from day one. You’ll see it in the welcome thread, where they never introduce themselves, and you’ll really see it at renewal, when the real price shows up. It’s the same reason cheap memberships are harder to run: the price someone pays is tied to how seriously they take the thing.

There’s a sneakier cost too. Put your membership on sale every November and people learn the pattern. Someone lands on your sales page in March, loves everything about it, and a little voice says, “Should I just wait for Black Friday?” You’ve made it smart to not join you for eleven months of the year.

And then there are your members. The ones who show up to every call, who answer questions in the feed before you get there, who joined at full price because they believed in what you were building. They open their inbox on Black Friday morning and see the exact thing they pay for marked down for people who haven’t walked in the door yet. Most of them won’t say a word. They’ll feel it.

If you’ve run a membership sale before, you’re in good company. Most of us were taught that’s just what you do in November. But it’s worth asking whether it serves the community you’re trying to grow.

What Can You Offer Instead of a Membership Discount?

Add value instead of cutting the price: a bonus call, an included bump, an annual-only bonus, a VIP welcome, or an event just for that week’s new members.

The price stays the price. You’re making this the best week to join.

A bonus call

Anyone who joins during your sale gets time with you: a one-on-one strategy call, a personal onboarding call, or a small group call for that week’s new members. It feels huge to the person joining, and it connects them to you in their first week, which does more for retention than almost anything else.

A bump

Take something you normally sell on its own, like a workshop replay, a template pack, or a mini course, and include it for anyone who joins that week. Same membership price, more in the bag.

An annual bonus

If you offer monthly and annual, give annual members something monthly members don’t get. It rewards the bigger commitment, and annual members tend to stay longer and go deeper.

A VIP welcome

A personal welcome video, a hand setting up their profile, a check-in at the end of their first week. It costs you a little time, and it makes people feel seen from the moment they arrive.

An event just for them

A December workshop only for the people who joined during your sale. It gives them something to look forward to and gets them showing up early, which is half the battle with any new member.

When you’re choosing, ask two questions. Can I actually deliver this? A one-on-one call for everyone sounds lovely until a hundred people join and you’re doing calls straight through New Year’s. And does it help them get a win inside my membership? The member who gets an early win is the member who stays.

When the sale ends, the bonus ends. That’s what makes it mean something.

Here’s ours. Anyone who joins the coCreator Society as an annual member during our sale gets the Goodie Bag: all three of our brand-new skill packs. A skill is a set of instructions you install into Claude so it knows how to do one specific job in your business, customized to your community, with the setup walked through step by step. The Report Pack runs the reports you keep meaning to get to, like an engagement report and a workflow audit. The Community Pack helps with the day-to-day of running your community. The Growth Pack helps you build landing pages, checkout pages, launches, and funnels.

What Else Can You Sell During Black Friday Week?

Smaller standalone offers built from what’s already inside your community, like templates, tools, and workshop replays, for the people who aren’t ready to join yet.

It’s a little like Thanksgiving dinner. I don’t invent a new menu every year. I make my nanny’s rolls. The recipes that already work are the ones everybody’s waiting for.

Open your community and list everything you’ve created for members. Don’t judge it yet. Then look for the pieces that:

  • Solve one clear problem
  • Give someone a quick win
  • Make sense without the rest of your community around them
  • Leave people a little curious about what’s inside

One of ours is Circle Build in a Box. You tell it what you’re building, and it gives you a custom checklist of exactly what to set up in Circle: your spaces, your access groups, your settings. Members already have it as part of The Membership Architect. For Black Friday, people who aren’t ready to join can grab it on its own. We’re not giving the membership away. We’re opening a smaller door.

Then decide what happens after someone buys, before you sell a single thing. This is the step almost everyone skips. The person who buys your template is one of the warmest people in your audience. They trusted you with their card. Map what they get right away, when you check in a week later, and when you invite them in. Not a hard sell. Just, “If this helped, here’s where we go deeper together.”

How Do You Run a Black Friday Promotion Without Burning Out?

Build from what already exists, finish the work before the week starts, keep the plan in one place, and give each offer its own day.

I’ve built some very elaborate promotions for clients over the years. For my own business this year, I wanted the opposite: something simple that runs while I’m home with my family.

  • Polish, don’t invent. Almost everything in our lineup already existed. The skill packs come from the AI team I use in my own business. Reworking them and recording a short how-to video for each is a very different energy than building from scratch.
  • Do the work before the week. Write and schedule the emails, queue the posts, set up and test the checkout pages. When Black Friday week arrives, everything should already be moving.
  • Keep it in one place. Ours lives in ClickUp, every offer, task, and video. When it’s all in one spot, you’re not lying awake wondering what you forgot.
  • One offer a day. One giant sale page makes people overwhelmed and they leave to “think about it.” One offer a day, Monday through Friday, gives each thing its moment, gives people a reason to open your email, and shows you exactly what your people got excited about.

How Should Your Members Feel During Your Sale?

Like insiders. Point out what’s already included in their membership, give them a small extra, and tell them before you tell anyone else.

I take my Thanksgiving table seriously. Every place setting gets the same care, and there may or may not be a custom name tag design every single year. Nobody gets the wobbly folding chair and the paper plate. Everyone who sits down should feel like they were expected.

That’s the feeling to aim for. Walk through your whole sale as one of your members:

  • Is something you’re selling already theirs? Say so, proudly. Circle Build in a Box is already included for our members, so that day is a reminder that they’re ahead of the game.
  • Can you give them a little extra? Our merch is 20% off for everyone and 30% off for members. Small, but it says, “I see you.”
  • Did they hear it first? Let them in on what’s coming and why you made the choices you made before the public emails go out.

Try This Prompt

If you want help finding your own Black Friday offers, hand this to Claude or ChatGPT:

“I run a [type of membership] for [who], priced at [price] monthly and [price] annually. Here is everything I’ve created for my members: [list templates, tools, replays, courses, guides]. I don’t want to discount my membership for Black Friday. Suggest three standalone offers from this list that solve one clear problem and give a quick win, and three ways to add value for people who join during the sale without changing the price. Give me a table with the offer, who it’s for, and what someone should receive right after they buy.”

The Best Black Friday Brings the Right People Closer

Protect the thing that pays your bills. Add to it instead of marking it down. Open a few smaller doors. Set it up so it runs without you, and take care of the people already sitting at your table.

The best Black Friday isn’t the one with the biggest discount. It’s the one that brings the right people a little closer, makes the people already inside feel good about where they are, and still lets you be present for the people you love.
