As the year winds down, it’s time to take a step back and evaluate. Picture January 2024: did you envision bustling events, rich discussions, and a community so engaged they couldn’t wait to log in? Now let’s take a real look—did things play out as planned? Today, we’re taking a journey through 2024 to explore what worked, what didn’t, and how you can carry these insights into an even more impactful 2025.

Welcome to Your Community Strategist! I’m Rachel, your host, and today kicks off the first of a six-part series on setting strategic, engaging goals for your community. We’ll start by reviewing 2024, laying the groundwork to build an intentional, successful 2025.

Step 1: Your 2024 Goals – A Community Report Card

Pull out the goals you set in January, whether they were metrics, milestones, or event attendance targets. Did you aim to grow membership, host more events, or boost engagement? List each goal and note your progress—did you meet, exceed, or fall short? Here’s where honesty shines: if you only grew by 25% instead of the planned 50%, that’s still progress! This assessment isn’t about perfect scores but about creating a realistic picture of your year.

Go a Step Deeper – Why Did You Meet (or Miss) the Mark?

Beside each goal, jot down the contributing factors. For the goals you hit, was it due to a new strategy? Perhaps more time spent on content creation? If a goal fell short, consider obstacles: unexpected challenges, lack of resources, or even a needed shift based on member feedback. Reflecting on these factors will reveal valuable insights to apply in 2025.

Step 2: Celebrate the Wins, Learn from the Misses

This is your moment to celebrate what went right and learn from the misses. List standout moments—events that sparked excitement, content that resonated, or even a well-received email series. Then dive deeper: why did these moments succeed? Was it the format, timing, or the promotion strategy? Think about what clicked with members and how you can replicate that magic.

Now, let’s flip the coin. Identify any content or activities that didn’t meet expectations. Was turnout lower than expected? Engagement rates less than stellar? Explore what might have impacted these results. Maybe the topic wasn’t right, the timing was off, or a particular format didn’t connect. By understanding these patterns, you’re not just evaluating; you’re building the foundation for smarter, more aligned decisions next year.

Step 3: Conduct a SWOT Analysis for Your Community

Take a strategic view of your community with a SWOT analysis. This classic tool is perfect for evaluating where you excel and where there’s room for growth:

  1. Strengths: Highlight what you did well. Did specific events drive strong engagement? Did a content format work particularly well? Recognizing your strengths gives you the confidence to lean into what your community loves.
  2. Weaknesses: Embrace these as growth opportunities. Were there resources you needed but didn’t have? Metrics you didn’t meet? This honest look helps you target areas for improvement with clarity.
  3. Opportunities: Look for new avenues. Are there emerging trends that align with your community’s mission? Are members showing interest in certain events or content types? List these possibilities and how they might support your 2025 goals.
  4. Threats: Be aware of external challenges, like shifting algorithms on social platforms or competition in your niche. Knowing these obstacles helps you plan with adaptability in mind.

With your SWOT analysis complete, you’ll have a comprehensive view of where your community stands at the end of 2024 and where you want to go next.

Step 4: Summarize Your Top 3 Successes and Challenges

To wrap up, distill your 2024 experience by listing your top three successes and three challenges. Your wins show you what to amplify in 2025, while your challenges point to areas needing a refined approach. This quick exercise gives you an actionable snapshot that’s both celebratory and insightful.

Example Questions:

  • Wins: What are you proudest of? What events or strategies got members excited?
  • Challenges: What obstacles did you face? Were there consistent themes in member feedback?
